Placements for Students with Learning Disabilities

Schools with expertise in learning disabilities are often appropriate for children with learning and attention issues. In some cases, schools fitting the needs of such a child are available locally.

At other times, a boarding school would be particularly beneficial for the student with learning problems. Christie Woodfin identifies the school whose approach matches the student's particular learning style, social maturity, and extracurricular interests. The school may specialize exclusively in students with learning disabilities, or it may have a heterogeneous population, along with strong LD support program.

The structured atmosphere of a boarding situation, including supervised homework time, helps teach self-management and organizational skills. In addition, many LD students function better without the daily transit time among home, school, activities and appointments.

In a safe learning environment, students with LD can become independent and self-confident. They often graduate with buoyed self-esteem and improved academic skills.

Christie Woodfin's extensive experience with learning disabilities, attention issues and Asperger/autism spectrum disorders enables her to provide incisive guidance to students and their parents.

Some college-age students with learning and attention problems are not ready to handle the relative freedom of a university setting. Ms. Woodfin works with such students to determine the appropriate next steps, academic or vocational, that will lead them towards a productive adulthood.
